François Vidocq, wrongly convicted for a crime he didn't commit, is sentenced to eight years of hard labor. With the help of his loyal friends Desfossés and Fil de fer, he escapes and becomes a fugitive, relentlessly pursued by his bitter enemy, Inspector Flambart. In 19th-century Paris, Vidocq leads a life of deception and crime, using cunning and disguises to survive. Eventually, Vidocq and Flambart join forces to fight crime, and Vidocq finds himself drawn to Annette.
