Leo, a kind-hearted primary school teacher, lives in Santo Tomás de Aquino, a district in northern Peru. He forms a loving family with Elena and their three daughters, all named María: María Esperanza, María Soledad, and María Paz, who is due to be born in a month. Leo and Elena plan to get married. However, due to the high crime rate and gang violence in northern Peru, they suffer an attack on their wedding day. In the attack, Chavito, a street child Leo had been teaching and had taken under his wing, is killed. Leo and Elena are forced to flee to Lima, as staying would put their daughters in danger. In Lima, Leo starts working at a new school. One day, his wife Elena vanishes without a trace, leaving behind a letter that seems to indicate she has abandoned her family. However, the truth is that she has been kidnapped by her brother Vicente, who has always loved her in secret and was never reciprocated.
