_**Um vislumbre da vida luxuosa do Rei Sol**_
Este filme conta a história de François Vatel, mestre de cerimónias ao serviço do príncipe Luís II de Condé, um dos aristocratas mais importantes da corte francesa, mas que tinha caído em desgraça junto do rei Luís XIV e não vivia na corte por estar falido. A aproximação de uma guerra com os Países Baixos fez com que Condé, ansioso por liderar os exércitos do rei, convidasse o rei para um fim de semana no seu Castelo de Chantilly, a fim de lhe agradar e de recuperar a simpatia real. Vatel é o responsável por organizar uma festa de três dias como nunca antes se viu para agradar ao rei. Com base em eventos históricos, o filme é dirigido por Roland Joffé, tem argumento de Jeanne Labrune (na versão original em francês) e apresenta Gérard Depardieu, Uma Thurman e Tim Roth.
Joffé conseguiu fazer o público reviver os eventos. Os ambientes, os locais de filmagem, os figurinos, a música, tudo foi pensado e analisado cuidadosamente para reproduzir a atmosfera do tempo, por isso devemos felicitar esse esforço pela precisão histórica, que até recebeu uma indicação ao Óscar de Melhor Direcção de Arte. Os actores trabalharam bem com os seus papéis. O roteiro também funciona de maneira interessante, incluindo algumas situações em que vislumbramos o contraste (e até o choque) dos dois mundos da França do século XVII: a riqueza e o luxo incomparável da corte e a miséria do povo. Nota positiva também para a banda sonora de Ennio Morricone, embora não seja uma das suas composições mais conhecidas ou mais interessantes.

_**A glimpse of the luxurious life of the Sun King**_
This film tells the story of François Vatel, a master of ceremonies at the service of Prince Louis II of Condé, one of the most important aristocrats of the French court, but that was bankrupt and away of the good graces of King Louis XIV. The approaching of a war with the Netherlands makes Condé, anxious to led the king's armies, to invite the king for a weekend at his Castle of Chantilly, hoping to be able to recover the royal sympathy. Then Vatel is in charge of organizing a three-day party, like never seen before, for king's amusement. Based on historical events, the film is directed by Roland Joffé, has argument by Jeanne Labrune (in original French version) and features Gérard Depardieu, Uma Thurman and Tim Roth.
Joffé managed to make the audience relive the events. The environments, the locations for filming, the costumes, the music, everything was thought out and analyzed carefully to reproduce the atmosphere of the time, so we must congratulate this effort for historical accuracy, which even received a nomination for the Oscar for Best Art Direction. The actors met well with their roles. The script also works in interesting ways, including some situations where we glimpse the contrast (and even shock) of the two worlds of seventeenth-century France: the richness and unparalleled luxury of the court and the absolute misery of the common people. Also positive note for the soundtrack of Enio Morricone, although not one of his best-known or most interesting compositions.
