Né le 1er août 1979 à Honolulu, Hawaï, Jason Momoa grandit à Norwalk, dans l'Iowa, avec sa mère photographe, avant de revenir dans son île natale à l'adolescence. À dix-neuf ans, il est repéré dans un magasin de surf et sélectionné parmi plus de 1 300 candidats pour rejoindre Alerte à Malibu (1999-2001), son premier rôle à l'écran.
