Edvard Munch, a renowned Norwegian painter, finds himself in the midst of a severe crisis at the age of 45. While the international art scene hails him as an artist of the future, his home country views him as a degenerate and a psychopath. His mother and sister Sophie succumbed to tuberculosis at a young age. His tumultuous relationship with his fiancée Mathilde Larsen ends in a gunshot wound that leaves his left middle finger permanently disabled. His sister Laura is committed to an asylum, and Munch fears that he too may soon succumb to mental illness. The artist feels a dark demon lurking within him.
