Linda and Alexandre's troubled marriage finally ends when Linda discovers Alexandre's affair with Tide. Rather than live unhappily, Linda chooses divorce, earning her the unusual label of "desquitada" in her conservative community. Their four children—Moacir, Lene, Marcos, and Lu—struggle to cope with the divorce. Moacir's relationship with Glória, a wealthy woman and daughter of the influential Venturini family, causes tension, as her parents want her to marry the traditional Toninho. Lene is secretly in love with her cousin Cícero, but their aunt Joana disapproves. Marcos pines for the vedete Fátima, who is also the mistress of Glória's father. Meanwhile, Lu faces bullying from Cássia at school. Complications arise when Linda begins a new relationship with the recently divorced Cláudio, whose ex-wife Leonor refuses to let him go and manipulates him through their young son Claudinho. Adding to the turmoil, Tide sets her sights on Moacir.
