Summary Remarkable Icelandic series from the director and author of Trapped with a fantastic cut that takes place in a small coastal town at the foot of a volcano. As in several Icelandic series, there is a kind of continuum between the psychology and the sufferings of its characters (magnificently performed by the cast) and the gray ash landscape, not only as a frame but as a materiality (which visually refers to Mars or a stage). post-apocalyptic) in a slow-paced story that takes time to develop his portraits and cross paths and destinations. As it should be. Its theme refers in part to other fictions, but that does not detract from its originality. Review Vik is a small town on the southern coast of Iceland at the foot of the Katla subglacial volcano. It is a time of intense volcanic activity with a lot of ash emission, so only the inhabitants who fulfill essential services remain in the town. But soon a phenomenon begins to occur that profoundly alters the lives of these residents and some visitors. How difficult it is to review this series without spoiling it (which I will only do in a section at the end). Katla's story is meticulously constructed. Slowly we are getting into the tempo of that town and its characters, totally traversed by the dusty and gray landscape covered with volcanic ash, a landscape that they travel in their 4x4 and that visually refers to Mars or a post-apocalyptic scene. Most of the characters go through various duels and each one handles them as best he can. The strange phenomenon that begins in Katla with the appearance of a naked woman covered in volcanic mud puts these sleepy and depressed characters in tension with these losses, a depression that blocks or filters even the perplexity that it should produce. Certainties and pessimism begin to be challenged by these inexplicable events. Does what happens constitute a new framework for denial or second chances? Trapped director Baltasar Kormákur's series, actually filmed in Vik and on the glacier, is slow-paced and takes time to develop his portraits and criss-cross the paths and destinies of his characters. At the same time that the mystery begins to be clarified, the story acquires, however, increasingly sinister edges. Katla's theme refers in part to other fictions, but that does not detract from her originality. As in several Icelandic series, there is a kind of continuum between the psychology and sufferings of its characters (magnificently performed by the cast) and the landscape not only as a frame but as a materiality, a continuity that in this fantastic tale acquires disturbing edges. SPOILER AREA The central theme of the series is that of the double, since the characters meet other versions (substitutes) of deceased relatives (and even other versions of themselves) as a product of their emotional and psychological projections on the mineral substrate of the volcano. . In the aspect of the encounter with substitutes, there is a certain analogy with The Invasion of the Body Usurpers and in terms of doubles and certain temporary imbalances, with Dark and even more so with Tales From The Loop, with whom it also shares the tone and rhythm. . For all this, it is not pertinent to point out similarities with Les Revenants, because in it there are no substitutes but the return of dead people.
