(CASTELLANO) Hay algo casi reconfortante en saber exactamente en qué terreno te estás metiendo, y Tarot no engaña a nadie en ese sentido. Es una película que abraza sin complejos la estructura más clásica del slasher moderno: un grupo de jóvenes, una idea “original” que parece divertida al principio y una sucesión de consecuencias que llegan, una tras otra, de forma inevitable. No hay sorpresa en el planteamiento, pero tampoco parece que la película aspire a reinventar nada. La historia avanza de manera directa, sin demasiados rodeos, apoyándose más en el concepto visual de las cartas y sus símbolos que en una verdadera construcción de personajes. Aquí nadie está especialmente desarrollado, y tampoco parece importar demasiado. Son piezas dentro de un engranaje que ya conocemos, y la película lo asume desde el minuto uno, para bien y para mal. Donde Tarot encuentra cierto atractivo es en su imaginería. Algunas ideas visuales funcionan mejor que la narrativa que las sostiene, y se nota un esfuerzo por diferenciar cada momento, aunque no siempre lo consiga. Hay escenas que llaman la atención, no tanto por el miedo que generan como por su puesta en escena, casi como si la película quisiera ser recordada más por estampas concretas que por su conjunto. El ritmo es irregular. A ratos se mueve con soltura y resulta entretenida, justo en ese punto en el que no te importa demasiado lo que estás viendo mientras siga avanzando. En otros momentos, en cambio, se vuelve repetitiva y previsible, recordándote constantemente a otras películas que ya han explorado este camino con más imaginación o mayor tensión. En conjunto, Tarot es una de esas propuestas que se dejan ver sin demasiada resistencia, pero que difícilmente dejan huella. Funciona como pasatiempo, especialmente para quien disfrute de este tipo de terror ligero y reconocible, pero se queda lejos de aportar algo nuevo al género. Las cartas están bien ilustradas, pero la partida ya la hemos jugado demasiadas veces. (ENGLISH) There’s something almost comforting about knowing exactly what kind of ground you’re stepping onto, and Tarot doesn’t try to fool anyone in that regard. It fully embraces the most classic structure of modern slashers: a group of young people, an “original” idea that seems fun at first, and a chain of consequences that arrive one after another, inevitably. There’s no real surprise in the setup, but the film doesn’t seem interested in reinventing anything either. The story moves forward in a straightforward way, without many detours, relying more on the visual concept of the cards and their symbols than on any real character development. No one here is especially fleshed out, and it doesn’t seem to matter much. They’re pieces in a mechanism we already know, and the film accepts that from the very first minute, for better or worse. Where Tarot finds a certain appeal is in its imagery. Some visual ideas work better than the narrative holding them together, and there’s a noticeable effort to give each moment its own identity, even if it doesn’t always succeed. There are scenes that stand out, not so much because of the fear they generate, but because of their staging, almost as if the film wanted to be remembered more for individual images than as a whole. The pacing is uneven. At times it moves along smoothly and feels entertaining, right at that point where you don’t really care what you’re watching as long as it keeps going. At other moments, though, it becomes repetitive and predictable, constantly reminding you of other films that have explored the same path with more imagination or stronger tension. Overall, Tarot is one of those films that goes down easily enough but leaves little behind. It works as a time-killer, especially for viewers who enjoy this kind of light, familiar horror, but it falls well short of bringing anything new to the genre. The cards may look nice, but the game has been played far too many times already.
