(INGLÉS) I Give It a Year (2013) is a romantic comedy that challenges the usual expectations of the genre. Directed by Dan Mazer, known for his work on Borat, the film focuses on the complications and challenges that arise during the first year of marriage for an unconventional couple. While it adheres to certain classic rom-com tropes, it sets itself apart by incorporating sharp humor and awkward situations that explore the highs and lows of modern relationships.
The cast is one of the film’s strongest assets. Rose Byrne and Rafe Spall star as newlyweds Nat and Josh, whose completely opposite personalities create much of the conflict and humor in the story. Anna Faris and Simon Baker, in supporting roles, add an interesting dynamic as the third parties in the mix, balancing emotional moments with comedic relief. The performances are supported by a script that, while not always spot-on, offers clever dialogue and memorable gags.
The movie unfolds as a satire of marriage and the unrealistic expectations often placed on life as a couple. Though some moments verge on caricature, it also delivers sharp insights into incompatibility and the struggle to sustain a relationship. However, some comedic twists may feel excessive or overly reliant on cringe humor, which might not appeal to all viewers.
Visually, I Give It a Year is appealing, with bright and warm settings that contrast with the script’s more cynical tone. The soundtrack complements the atmosphere but doesn’t particularly stand out. What truly shines is how the film dares to question the norms of the romantic comedy genre, although at times it doesn’t fully commit to its critical approach, leaving viewers with a sense of unfulfilled depth.
Overall, I Give It a Year is an entertaining film that strays from the typical rom-com formula with its cynical tone and edgy humor. While it doesn’t always strike the perfect balance between laughs and emotional weight, it offers enough standout moments to make it a worthwhile option for those seeking something different in the genre.
