(CASTELLANO) La idea de una noche sin ley para liberar la violencia reprimida de una sociedad podrida ya era perturbadora desde el primer filme. Pero aquí, con esta precuela, todo se vuelve más explícito y político, como si los creadores hubieran decidido quitarse la careta. Y lo cierto es que funciona… en parte. La película presenta el experimento original que lo desencadena todo, y lo sitúa en Staten Island, con claros paralelismos con el Estados Unidos de Trump. No hay medias tintas: la referencia a una América que utiliza la violencia como método de control social está en cada plano. La atmósfera logra inquietar, y algunas secuencias están muy bien rodadas. Hay momentos de acción que realmente atrapan, y aunque el guion no sea una maravilla, al menos sabe adónde quiere ir. Lo mejor llega cuando la película abraza su rabia y se convierte en un grito contra el racismo estructural, la manipulación del miedo y la desigualdad. El protagonista, interpretado con mucha energía, se convierte en una especie de héroe de acción de barrio que cae bien y al que quieres seguir. Eso sí, también hay que decir que no siempre está bien equilibrada. Algunas decisiones narrativas son demasiado obvias, y los diálogos a veces parecen subrayados con rotulador fosforito. Le falta sutiliza. Y si uno ya conoce la saga, no se lleva muchas sorpresas: esto es más de lo mismo, pero con un enfoque algo más directo y cargado de mensaje político. Aun así, no se siente como un simple reciclaje. El trasfondo social es lo que más destaca. Hay escenas en las que se nota claramente la intención de incomodar, de sacudir conciencias. No es solo entretenimiento violento, sino una distopía que se atreve a señalar con el dedo. Puede que no lo haga con la elegancia de otros thrillers sociales, pero al menos no se queda en la superficie. Y eso, en una franquicia que parecía destinada a agotarse en su propia fórmula, es de agradecer. En resumen, puede que no sea la entrega más redonda de la saga, pero sí una de las más combativas. Si entras en el juego, y te interesa su lectura política, es probable que la disfrutes. Si solo buscas tiros y sangre, también los tendrás. Pero en esta ocasión, hay algo más detrás de la máscara. But here, in this prequel, everything becomes more explicit and political, as if the creators had finally taken off the mask. And the truth is, it works… to a certain extent. The film presents the original experiment that triggered it all, set in Staten Island, with clear parallels to Trump’s America. There’s no subtlety: the reference to a country using violence as a method of social control is present in every frame. The atmosphere manages to be unsettling, and some sequences are really well shot. There are action moments that genuinely grab you, and even if the script isn’t brilliant, at least it knows where it’s going. The best parts come when the film embraces its anger and turns into a shout against structural racism, fear manipulation, and inequality. The lead character, played with a lot of energy, becomes a kind of local action hero that you root for and want to follow. That said, it doesn’t always feel balanced. Some narrative choices are too obvious, and the dialogue is sometimes highlighted as if with a fluorescent marker. Subtlety is not its strength. And if you already know the franchise, there aren't many surprises: this is more of the same, just with a more direct and message-heavy approach. Still, it doesn’t feel like a simple rehash. What really stands out is the social backdrop. There are scenes that clearly aim to make the viewer uncomfortable, to shake up some consciences. It’s not just violent entertainment but a dystopia that dares to point fingers. It might not do so with the elegance of other socially-conscious thrillers, but at least it doesn't stay on the surface. And for a franchise that seemed doomed to wear out its own formula, that’s something to appreciate. In short, it might not be the most polished installment in the saga, but it’s certainly one of the boldest. If you're in the mood for its political message, you’ll probably enjoy it. And if you're just looking for action and blood, you’ll get that too. But this time, there’s more behind the mask.

The fourth film in the "Purge" franchise, "The First Purge" serves as a prequel to the 2013 original. The story follows the New Founding Fathers of America as they conduct a radical experiment on Staten Island, allowing residents to commit any crime for twelve hours with no consequences. While the previous films in the franchise have been criticized for their violence and lack of originality, "The First Purge" continues this trend and adds little to the franchise. The performances of Y'lan Noel and Lex Scott Davis are notable, but the film is otherwise filled with cliches and contrivances, and lacks tension or atmosphere. The addition of neon lights and Marisa Tomei in a blonde wig seems to be the only real reason for this movie's existence.
