(ENGLISH) Some films do not need to reinvent anything in order to work. They simply need to know exactly what they are, move with confidence and avoid boring the viewer for even a minute. Those Who Wish Me Dead belongs to that kind of classic thriller: direct, tense and very entertaining, made from familiar ingredients but assembled with enough craft to make the result enjoyable almost all the way through.
Taylor Sheridan’s hand is easy to recognise. This is not his most complex or powerful work, but it has his taste for characters damaged by guilt, hostile landscapes, dry violence and a kind of tension in which the environment itself seems to become part of the threat. Here, the forest, the fire and the human danger all push the story forward with the same pressure.
Angelina Jolie works very well as the emotional centre of the film. Her character carries a trauma that could have felt like a simple dramatic device, but Jolie gives it presence, exhaustion and vulnerability without weakening the character’s strength. She does not need to overplay anything. She holds the film with a convincing mixture of toughness and fragility.
The supporting cast also helps. Aidan Gillen, always effective, once again proves that he can turn a functional villain into an unsettling presence with very little. The film does not explore its antagonists in great depth, but it uses them well: they are clear, cold, professional threats, almost mechanical in their determination. In a survival thriller, that can be enough.
The plot is fairly predictable. Some developments are easy to anticipate, some writing choices are convenient, and the structure sometimes seems more interested in keeping the pace alive than in surprising the audience. But the film compensates for those limitations with energy, visual tension and a tight running time. It does not get lost in unnecessary explanations, and it never pretends to be deeper than it is.
Its greatest strength is efficiency. It works as a chase thriller, as a survival story and as a piece of adult genre entertainment. It has fire, killers, emotional wounds, a threatening natural setting and characters forced to resist when everything seems to be against them. Not everything is memorable, but almost everything is handled well.
It may be minor Sheridan, but it still has more nerve, craft and sense of spectacle than many recent thrillers. Those Who Wish Me Dead does not dazzle, but it grips. And sometimes that is exactly what one wants: an intense, well-acted, straightforward film that keeps you watching until the end.
