A wealthy and stingy innkeeper, fearing divine retribution for his dishonest deeds, takes a pilgrim's advice and writes down his sins, vowing to donate a coin to beggars for each one. News of this reaches hell, and Lucifer, worried about losing a sinner, dispatches Boniface to thwart the innkeeper's plan. Boniface fails, and as punishment, Lucifer sends him to Earth to serve as a servant for three years. Boniface finds himself working for the very same innkeeper, who not only doesn't pay him but also forces him into a marriage with the unpleasant and unattractive Dorothea.
