Mexico, early 20th century. Young Maria Helena, daughter of one of the most powerful men in the capital, Dom Rafael Zomora de Juncal, is in love with Alfredo Martins, son of her father's enemy. The lovers meet secretly, and the only person who knows is Dolores, Maria Helena's confidante and a long-time employee of the Juncal family. Maria Helena reveals what Dolores already suspects: she is pregnant with Alfredo's child.
