In late 19th-century Tsarist Russia, over half the world's Jewish population (nearly 5 million) resided within its borders. This region was later emptied of its Jewish inhabitants through the massacres that accompanied the Russian Civil War, the atrocities committed during World War II, and a persistent migration movement.
