Sir John Falstaff, a comic opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, with a libretto by Arrigo Boito. The plot is based on William Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor and, to some extent, on Henry IV. This opera, premiered in 1893 in Milan, was Verdi's final major stage work. Falstaff is also the title of an opera by Antonio Salieri, premiered in 1799 in Vienna, and of a "symphonic study" by Edward Elgar, composed in 1913. See also John Fastolf.
