Bedřich Smetana composed his final opera, "Libuše," during a period of heavy depression and illness, essentially alone in Jabkenice. He adapted and completed the original libretto of the romantic fairy tale "Eliška Krásnohorská" according to his own feelings. The struggle of a divided personality, between the devil and a monk, resonated with him deeply. Similarly, he identified with the melancholy of Vok, betrayed by life, and the passionate longing of Jarka. Smetana poured the weight of his fate and his acceptance of it into this work, which not only celebrated the greatest human emotion, love, but also marked a new compositional achievement that was ahead of its time.
