The documentary was primarily produced by the same team behind the acclaimed and award-winning series "Walking with Dinosaurs" and "Walking with Beasts," although Tim Haines, director of these two series, was not involved in "Walking with Cavemen." In previous documentaries, prehistoric animals were reconstructed using computer-generated imagery and animatronic models. For "Walking with Cavemen," actors were used instead, with makeup and prosthetics added to give them a more human touch.
