"Contributions" unfolds in 1918 in Perm. The exhausted Siberian White Army under the command of young General Anatoly Nikolaevich Pepelyaev seizes the city. Short on ammunition, supplies, and provisions, the general invites local merchants to raise funds for the army. Wealthy widow Chaagina contributes a valuable diamond. The next day, the diamond vanishes mysteriously. To find it, they enlist the help of condemned "red" investigator Andrei Murzin, who's promised a pardon in exchange for its recovery.
