In 1949, during the 22 days leading up to the founding of the People's Republic of China, this film unfolds in the city of Beiping. It chronicles the radical shifts in the lives of three brothers, Jin Hai, Tie Lin, and Xu Tian, and a love story between Xu Tian and Tian Dan. Xu Tian, a police officer investigating his fiancée's murder, uncovers a trail that ultimately leads him to participate in Beiping's liberation. Jin Hai, Tie Lin, and Xu Tian, as close as brothers, grapple with historical changes and conflicting beliefs, making choices that send them down different paths. Xu Tian and Tian Dan, a Communist Party member, meet in their darkest hours and find common ground that brings them together.
