Archaeologists discover the remains of an ancient civilization capable of building giant robots. One of them, Dr. Hell, believes that if he can construct similar robots, he could rule the world. The other archaeologist, Dr. Kabuto, refuses to support Hell's evil plans, making them enemies. Hell orders Kabuto's assassination, but before dying, Kabuto shows his grandson, Koji Kabuto, a robot he secretly built to counter Hell. The robot, Mazinger Z, is made of the powerful Z metal. After Kabuto's death, Koji learns to pilot Mazinger Z with the help of Dr. Yomi, Kabuto's assistant, who also built a robot called Aphrodite A, piloted by his daughter Sayaka Yomi. Mazinger Z and Aphrodite A then face off against Hell's evil robots to save the world.
