Gaston Phébus

In the midst of the Hundred Years' War, Gaston marries his childhood sweetheart, Myriam, whom he loves deeply. However, fate intervenes as he is summoned to meet King Charles the Bad of Navarre. The king's sister, Agnès, becomes instantly infatuated with Gaston. With her brother's help, she has Myriam poisoned and tries to ensnare Gaston in a web of love. In retaliation, Fébus forces Agnès into marriage, refuses to consummate it, and then takes numerous lovers.
