In the fictional central European country of Illyria, towards the end of World War II, a young man assumes the role of secretary in the household of a left-wing politician. Unbeknownst to his new employer, the young man has been tasked by the Communist party with assassinating the politician, who is suspected of pursuing a strategy of compromise with other political parties.
