On August 31, 1939, the Reich staged a Polish attack on a German radio station in Gleiwitz. Disguised SS men carried out the operation, providing Hitler with a pretext to invade Poland the next day. However, the plan backfired: France and the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. This covert maneuver, orchestrated by Himmler on Hitler's orders, thus ignited World War II.
