In rural areas where economic conditions were once poor and outdated customs prevailed, Yang Dama and Wu Laosan, two elderly villagers, agreed to a "gentlemen's agreement" for their children. Yang Dama's son JinGUI and daughter TaoYao were to marry Wu Laosan's son ChengLin and daughter QiuMei respectively, much to the dismay of the young couple. However, times have changed, and the families have prospered. Eager to fulfill their promise, Yang Dama and Wu Laosan face a challenge when QiuMei refuses the arranged marriage, citing lack of love. Wu Laosan, despite his worldly wisdom, is at a loss to handle his daughter's defiance. Meanwhile, JinGUI and TaoYao, who have secretly fallen in love, elope, further complicating the situation. QiuMei discovers JinGUI's affection for another woman, Wang Chunlan, and selflessly supports their union. Yang Dama, however, insists on the original agreement, leading to a dramatic turn of events at the wedding. In the end, both couples find happiness, while QiuMei remains single but hopeful for the future.
