Topaze, a schoolteacher, clashes with the local priest over his teaching of morality. However, reality, such as his appeal to the opposite sex, harshly teaches him that principles have their limits, and nothing is more alluring than social success. "Topaze" (1936) is the first of two cinematic adaptations of Marcel Pagnol's play, directed by Pagnol himself, who was dissatisfied with the treatment of his work in the 1933 version.
