In the Czech Republic, the Archbishop's Forestry Administration sues farmer Josef Dubják, accusing him of illegal logging on their land. Despite clear records proving the land belongs to him, as it has for generations, the court rules against him and orders him to pay a hefty fine. Enraged, Dubják insults the forest ranger Horáček, who had testified falsely against him. Horáček countersues for defamation, prompting Dubják to finally hire lawyer Fuchs. Fuchs demands a substantial retainer, forcing Dubják to sell his cow to afford it.
