Dino (Horst Buchholz), the son of a wealthy American woman (Bette Davis) and an Italian noble, finds his budding painter's career stifled by the emptiness of his privileged life and an uninspired canvas. His world is turned upside down when he meets Cecilia (Catherine Spaak), a young woman who had been an artist's model and lover to an older painter, who died during their intimate encounter. In the void of his bourgeois existence, Dino discovers the true meaning of passion.
