Philippe de Morannes, a renowned newspaper editor, and Claudine André, an up-and-coming journalist known for her wit and humor, cross paths. During an interview, they learn that Philippe's wife, Paulette Nanteuil, an actress, has entrusted a note to an American star, signed with Claudine's name. Add to this a maid paid to be nosy, and a charming dance of lies, promises, misunderstandings, and audacity ensues. By the end, each of these four main characters finds themselves in a new role.
