Nikola Veras, a renowned brigade leader of the "New Furrow" collective farm, and Nastya, an agronomist from the "Bright Path" collective farm, are planning to get married. They aim to determine which of the two farms is superior, so they can live and work together there. While "New Furrow" offers higher wages and more grain per labor day, it lags behind in social amenities, lacking electricity, radio, and a club. Chairman Pytlevanny views these as minor issues.
