In an apartment by the Han River, high school teacher Gwak Seung-yeop lives with the sex worker Ma Geum-ja, while artist Jang Hyun-wook and his wife Han Ok-geum run a toy store. Gwak, Jang, and Ma are occasional drinking buddies who share their innermost thoughts, with Ma having a deep affection for Jang. Across the river, a pigeon from Japanese housewife Oh Eun-ju's apartment flies into Gwak's, leading to their acquaintance. A meddling broker in the apartment complex raises Ma's rent, and a beautician's scheming harms Han's toy store. After a heated argument about art, Jang and Ma confess their love for each other, and that night, Jang jumps into the Han River. When Ma decides to leave the apartment, Han gives her all their assets and follows her husband. Gwak visits Eun-ju, but she has become a nun at Song-am Temple, so he also leaves the apartment.
