At a filmmakers' retreat, a power outage occurred. At that moment, Professor Bukovanský was murdered, having just returned from a trip to Zurich. There, he had met with a former film theorist and emigrant who was supposed to help him understand certain aspects of wartime collaboration among film workers, particularly the behavior of director Holub, who was reportedly killed by an enraged mob for alleged collaboration. Bukovanský was a harsh critic with many enemies. The initial suspects in the investigation are his former lover and the mother of his child, as well as his current lover, who wanted to leave him for her friend, Dr. Herlem. However, Herlem is also found dead during the investigation. The motive behind these crimes initially remains unclear.
