The story follows a father and his two sons, exploring themes of tolerance and understanding. Eldest son Vašek is the black sheep of the family, having failed both academically and in his personal life. He marries against his father's wishes, and the marriage ends in failure. The father refuses any attempts at reconciliation, dismissing Vašek's efforts as futile. Younger brother Michal is successful in his studies, has a girlfriend, and enjoys the use of their father's car. However, the older brother's once-admired status has faded. The strong emotional bond between the brothers ultimately gives Vašek the strength to fight for his father's love once more.
