Imre Madách marries Erzsi Fráter against his mother's wishes, but Erzsi proves to be an unsuitable wife. The revolution and subsequent imprisonment separate Madách from his family. While Madách is imprisoned in Pest, Erzsi entertains her suitors. Upon his return, Madách finds not a peaceful home in Sztregova, but a wife who lives only for pleasure. After leaving Madách bedridden at home, Erzsi attends a ball. Madách, at his mother's urging, then expels his young wife from the house.
