In a celestial realm where angels and saints find amusement in human intimacy, and a decaying Jesus presides over crumbling ceilings, a dying man's desperate prayers reach the heavens. On Earth, it's Christmas, 1999, and Jacques, a terminal cancer patient, crosses paths with Sophie, a pregnant woman left to fend for herself. Both face daunting challenges: Jacques' impending death, and Sophie's impending motherhood, with their respective outcomes due in the spring. Jacques, the proprietor of a struggling cabaret, grapples with financial ruin due to his landlord's insistence on a nightly, 15-minute Jesus-themed monologue delivered by the uninspiring Bernard. This ritual sends the cabaret's patrons fleeing, leaving Jacques with no choice but to appeal to the heavens for intervention. His prayers are answered when Bernard meets an untimely end in a car crash. As Jacques' life ebbs away, he becomes obsessed with crafting memorable last words, documenting his final days on a trusty tape recorder. Meanwhile, in the afterlife, the late Bernard takes up a protective watch over Jacques and Sophie, his unseen presence proving instrumental in their survival.
