Paolo Solinas, a young priest, returns to his hometown in Sardinia, where he finds himself caught in the middle of a feud between two rival families: the Barras and the Corraine. Remembering the love that once bound him to Agnese, a daughter of the Barras, Paolo tries to reconcile the two families. The head of the Corraine family wants to marry his nephew to Agnese, but the young woman, still in love with Paolo, refuses the marriage. The war escalates with renewed vigor. Realizing that he still feels attracted to Agnese, and that she reciprocates, Paolo decides to request a transfer.
