Oskar Held, the protagonist, like other "diversity enemies," must face his just punishment. Once a successful left-wing writer, bestselling author, and sought-after talk show guest, Held is now branded a "traitor" and "reactionary" for daring to criticize the ruling Humanitarian People's Council's policies. Under their rule, convicted offenders don't go to prison; instead, prison comes to them in the form of societal isolation. This includes separation from their usual environment, family, friends, and workplace, mandatory re-education at the Thought Untangling Center, and implantation of surveillance devices to prevent further anti-good Samaritan activities.
