In the northern province, Wu Min Chan and Kuang La Lung, both vying for the position of garrison commander, rally their allies: Wu with Shi Wen and Sha Chung, while Kuang is backed by Pei Chiang, Si Ma, and Niu Chung. As Shi Wen's influence grows, he orders Niu Chung to assassinate Wu using the dagger of Lui Yan, leading to Lui Yan's suicide before the commander. Consumed by guilt, Niu is imprisoned for public drunkenness. Shi Wen then sends Niu's mistress, Pai Siow Lan, to poison Niu. Pai drinks the poison herself and urges Niu to escape. Disillusioned by Shi's true nature, Niu confronts him and takes his own life after killing Shi.
