Yu Mong-yuen, a journalist recovering from a leg injury, finds himself in the apartment of his fiancée, Man-wah. Bored, he looks out the back window and observes the lives of the people in the neighboring building. Among them are a man keeping a woman, an older man who wants to marry a young woman but she's in love with his son; a cunning fortune teller; a lively gym, where a wealthy widow argues with the trainer because her dog bit her cat; and an opera school, where a woman sings, leaning on the balcony, and a man tries to strangle her. In reality, they're just rehearsing an opera... One night, Wah is on duty and Yuen sees how the opera troupe rehearses until late. Under the influence of drugs, Yu mistakenly believes a divorced man has killed a taxi dancer. He alerts the police, but it turns out to be a misunderstanding.
