In 1979, in a humble courtyard in Beijing's southern district, widowed pickle factory worker Tang Yu-xiu (Yan Ni) and divorced firefighter Cheng Da-he (Zhou Xiao-bing) tie the knot. Tang's son Fang Hai (Shang Zi-jian), initially opposed to the marriage, suspects the Cheng family's interest in his late father's courtyard. Cheng's mother (Gong Jing-hua) and younger brother Xiao Lin (Tong Yu-e) are indeed swayed by this thought. Da-he's daughter Juan-juan (Dai Le-le) mirrors Fang Hai's disdain for Da-he, barely acknowledging Tang. Post-marriage, Tang and Da-he prioritize their family's needs, gradually winning over Fang Hai and Juan-juan with their sincerity. Later, Xiao Lin marries his long-time love Li Li (Yao Ming) with their help; Juan-juan weds the honest scholar Lu Nan (Yu En-tai); Fang Hai finds success with businessman Xie Bo-da (Hong Jian-tao) and reunites with childhood sweetheart Guo Xiao-zhu (Gou Xiao-jie); Tang and Da-he even have a child, Cheng Jun (Dong Bo-wen). Despite occasional friction, the family harmonizes. Unexpectedly, a few years later, Xiao Lin and his wife use the house and Cheng Jun to pressure Tang and Da-he.
